Hello Kathy,
Yes, it is an expensive business - there are local registrars in Scotland
- I had occasion to send for a marriage which was in the IGI, I knew took
place, but which the SGRO said they couldn't find. I sent off to the
local registrar and it came back immediately, but the bad news is ,it
costs the same.
I have found it vastly cheaper with Scotland to employ a researcher - cost
for cost, and because they have access to the original records, it works
out a much better deal - I write an upper price on my cheque, or ask him
to research to that amount, give him a list of all the things I want him
to find, and back comes a transcript. When I can afford another hour or
two, he just carries on. The volume of info has been remarkable - but I do
as much as I can locally, so that he just needs to go and look up rather
than an extensive search. I can recommend my researcher and give you his
address if you mail me personally.
Best wishes,
Diane
