Dear Carolyn,
Many thanks to you and the others for your warm welcome to the Hillin
clan. I am a Scottish Yorkhire resident. My search begins 1917. My
grandmother Catherine (Kate)(( nee McDonald)) Hillin living in
Saltcoats,Ayrshire,SCO. b. 1865/6 d. 1937 (interred Yorkshire).
She was the widow of James Hillin Painter/Decorator. Killed in fall at
work, where unknown, b.d.dates unknown.
They had 7 children. Family movement geographially: from 1917
SCO>IRE>ENG>SCO
I would especially like to find their son Arthur Hillin, (my uncle) he
was a POW in Germany, WW1. Mother said he couldn't settle after the war
and "went away". She also told me her sister had the family name
researched many years ago, and was traced back to France.
My questions then were: Were the Hillins Hugeonots?
Were they recruited to fight for America War of Independence?
Did Arthur emigrate:USA/CAN/AUS?
I am a founder member of the Wakefield Family History Society. A search
in the 1851 cencus produced the names Hellin, Hellen (which Jerry may
note). But unforunately no Hillins. Tel. directory enquries produced
one or two Hillin families in Glasgow area. They were happy to help but
could only go back as far as my mother's generation where John Hillin =
Elizabeth McDonald (interesting my grandmother was Catherine
McDonald).Another call suggested that John had a brother Daniel and
sister Mary Hillin (interesting my mother was Mary Hillin). Other
suggested names were McPhail,Jupp/Japp,Wallace, also on the back of a
photo of grandmother Catherine Hillin is pencilled - copy to Mrs
Martindale Selby(Yorks.)
I am so pleased to have made contact with other Hillins. As I am a
wheelchair user I cannot get physiclal access to the usual places for
onfo. so have latched on to the "Net". I think I'm what you call a
"Newbie" just a few weeks old! Ihope the limited info. I have given may
help others and do so hope I can find Uncle Arthur.
sincerely,
Catherine
