Subject: Hunter of Irvine and Morris of Glasgow Families

I have an ancestor named John Hunter (1760-1826) who reportedly came
from Irvine, Ayr, Scotland to Alexandria, Virginia, USA where he
established a shipyard and married Cordelia Meeks Hatton (1756-1815) in
1785.

I have seen it asserted that he was the son of Edward Hunter, Shipmaster
of Irvine, Ayr, Scotland who married a Margaret Morris, "of an
established family from Glasgow." This Edward had a son Malcolm, born
in Irvine, who also had a son Colin born in Irvine who went to
Alexandria, VA, USA. (The source for these data was Brockett, F. L., The
Lodge of Washington, A History of the Alexandria Washington Lodge No.22,
1783-1876. Alexandria, VA. 1899--no sourcing provided).

I have no further information on this side of my ancestry. Any links or
tips?

I have heard that Irvine Parish records of either marriages or baptisms
exist from 1645 in Ayrshire, Scotland, but I have no idea about how to
gain information from such records. I am hopeful that such records may
contain data of use to this inquiry.
