Subject: Gamekeeper John Currie--Kirkoswald
Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1998 14:25:17 -0400
Hello to All
On his son William's death record, John CURRIE is said to have been a
gamekeeper. I have found John Currie in the 1841 Census for Kirkoswald in
the Culzean Castle district, Balchriston, Bowmanhill, William's birthplace
in 1826. John was said to be 60 then and born in Ireland. His wife, Sarah
CAMPBELL, must have been deceased by 1841, but she was 45 in 1831
Kirkoswald. John Currie does not appear in the 1851 for Kirkoswald.
Can anyone enlighten me on the duties of a gamekeeper? Did he work for an
estate or prominent family? Would such an estate possibly have records?
Anyone with any information about this area of Ayrshire?
The 1851 census for Kirkoswald, Culzean Castle district, Balchriston area,
shows a Donald MCNICOL, un, 27, Gamekeeper, born Argyleshire,
Killcolmonell? residing at Old Thomaston. Since a John Currie married a
Sarah Campbell in Argyll (banns in Killean & Kilchenzie and Campbelltown),
it would be interesting to see if there is any connection.
Thanks in advance for any comments.
