Subject: Re: Double marriage entries

Hi Karon,
(1) The OPR index lists 06 Mar 1819, Loudoun, for the marriage of your
John Kilpatrick. Source is M116034, frame 795, which is the parish
register, and is found on film #1041393 (frame 795).
(2) The IGI lists 29 Feb 1819, Newmilns, Ayr, (bride is Janet WYLIE).
The film is #884884, sheet 39. This film contains submissions to the
Mormon church for baptism (of the dead) purposes. (This has nothing to
do with the religion of your ancestor.)
(3) The IGI also lists 06 Mar 1819, Loudoun (bride is Janet WYLIE). Same
film # as found in the OPR index.
(4) A third listing in the IGI that you apparently didn't notice is 28
Feb 1819, New Milns, Lanarkshire (obviously an error for Ayrshire) (bride
is Jeanette WYLIE). The film is #1760834. This film is also a
submission to the church, and not a parish record.
(5) A fourth entry on the IGI is for 29 Feb 1820, Newmilns, Ayrshire
(bride is Janet WILEY). Film is #1395611, sheet 28, and it's a
submission, as well.
(6) Since you said in your email yesterday that you couldn't recall if
your information came from the IGI or ancestral file, I checked both for
you. The ancestral file shows John Kilpatrick born 02 Feb 1798 in
"Landmark Co., Scotland!" This will be Lanarkshire. Spouse, Janet
WILEY. The record tells that he died in Michigan, 14 Mar 1869. You
should go into this file and examine it by hitting F8 for descendancy,
because there is an extensive descendancy chart, the latest birth date
being 1850. Janet is listed as born 04 Oct 1797, Ayrshire. The OPR will
possibly have entries for Janet's and John's births within a few years of
those dates, if not the exact ones. Look under Jessie if you don't see
her birth or christening under Janet, since it's the same name in
Scotland.
You really should order all four films. As I said in my earlier post,
you should examine the entire parish register for other family events
including deaths. The ancestral file submissions will be useful to you
because they may show other members of the family tree, and will give you
the name and address of the submitter who may be related to you.
Depending on the date of the submission, the submitter may have
relocated, in which case you can fill in a request for his new address,
and the Mormon church can try to locate him for you. Or if you have
access to a phone disk, and the name is uncommon enough, you can possibly
find it faster that way. If he is deceased, you can try looking for his
descendants.
The discrepancies in marriage dates in this case are not due to multiple
parish register listings, but to submissions in recent times by possible
family members, who were apparently unaware of the parish register
entries. Newmilns is a village in Loudoun Parish. Check the OPR index
for births of their children, and if they had not emigrated yet, you
might find them in the 1841, 1851, and 1861 censuses. The children's
places of birth will tell you where they should be found in the censuses.

>>I have an ancestor John KILPATRICK from Glasgow or Barony, Lanark,
Scotland, who married Janet WILEY or WYLIE, in 1819, and there are two
marriage dates shown; one is in Newmilns, Ayr, Scotland and the other is
in Lounds, Scotland
(I think that is how it is spelt). Can you explain this in the same way
that you did for the other individual? Also, do the records you have
show parents for Janet WILEY? I can find nothing at the FHC. I would
appreciate any information you can share re this couple.
