I'm trying to focus on Austria which I know well, and maybe on neighbor
states as far as my experience goes...

*Wheather
you can expect it to be warmer and more friendly in May, on average it
certainly is - not a surprise, I guess ;-)
*Accomodation-prices
In general conditions would be the same re. accomodation. What I don't
know is when the high season (high-price) period for hotels does start.
Also depends on the place.
*Accomodation-availability: In some places like for instance
Vienna/Austria there's heavy congress tourism, so at certain times you
may find placing a reservation a bit difficult.

Yes, you'll see those in some places like Poland, Slovakia (with
emphasis on the Eastern parts) and as I believe still in the Czech
Republic (don't know about Hungary). Personally I would select the
companies with the fewest restrictions (naturally) and take all the
insurance I can get. Also - in several of the areas mentioned it's good
advice to have your car only in a hotel garage or a car park with an
attendant.

Don't know too much about B&B in these parts, because as far as I know
you'll not find it too often - for instance not in Austria. There what
you'll find though are places called 'Pension' or 'Fremdenzimmer'. In
general what you'll get there is a room only, and possibly breakfast too
(or not, like with a Fremdenzimmer - which I wouldn't recommend unless
it's in one of the alpine tourism regions). Difficult to judge the
quality of such places beforehand ... better use a guide.

Re. genealogical research, if you need /plan to visit any archives, be
sure to make a reservation in advance. Some of them have waiting
lists... but that's certainly something I needn't tell you ;-)
