What's your problem section page 68
"Can you tell me a little avout the history and origins of the Pilgrim
Church in Flinders St City?"
According to the publication /An Historical and Architectural Guide to
the Pilgrim Church/ a site in Flinders St, facing Victoria Sq and
measuring 209 feet by 211 feet (63.7m by 64.3m) was bought in 1863 for
1000 pounds.
The foundation stone of the new Stow Memorial Church was laid on tuesday
February 7 1865 in the base of the proposed steeple and the building was
formally opened onf Friday April 12 1867.
ON Trinity Sunday June 1 1969, Piries St Methodist Church and Stow
Memorial Congregational Church united to form one congregation. For
more than a century the two buildings stood back to back, a locked gate
way keeping the two congregations apart, except on rare ecumenical
occasions.
The unions was a historic event, as each church was the pioneer church
of its denomination in South Australia.
At the time of the union the interim name , Union Church in the City was
adopted. In May 1974 the plan for the three denominations
(Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian) to move forward into the
Uniting Church of Australia was ratified.
The people of this city church began to look for a permanent name to
take into the Uniting Church and Pilgrim Church was adopted in November
1975."
Hope this is interesting.
Happy New Year
Lynda
