Kalyra Hospital, Gloucester Ave, Belair 1894
Kalyra was built following the death of James Brown, who left his wife Jessie a large sum of money. She then bequeathed
it through the Executor, Trustee and Agency Company of South Australia for benevolent purposes as a memorial to her husband.
The legacy was used to provide a Consumptive Home either free, or moderate charges to patients.
The first buildings at Kalyra were erected in 1894, and the first
patients admitted in 1895.
Kalyra is now an aged care facility.
Kalyra Aged Care is on Kalyra Rd Belair (James Brown Memorial Trust )
and
Kalyra Heights Village is on Gloucester Ave , Belair
In 1902 "Nunyara" at Belair was opened by
Dr Gault for patients with consumptive
complaints. He was the district's doctor,
Council health inspector and drove one
of the earliest cars in the district.
