Try your local library first - they are likely to have a general history
book of SA.

Most of the books I have read on my holidays to SA from SA local libraries
were extremely detailed and probably not what you are looking for. Look
for authors like Douglas Pike. Also see SA websites to see the names of
history books and possibly some potted history online.

One of the main themes of SA history is religious tolerance - that's why
there are lots of Lutherans and small religions.
