Good morning Listers,

I was hoping that I could have some help with the above mentioned
families living in Mount Gambier in the 1850s.

In 1852 Charles Jonas Valentine 17 (born 1835 - from Brockdish, Norfolk,
England), arrived in Mount Gambier. Charles Valentine was the son of
Charles and Ann Valentine (nee Doughty) from Brockdish in Norfolk,
England. Charles Valentine in 1863 married one Isabella Anne Johnston
at Penola, where his Uncle, Charles (George) Doughty (born Norfolk,
England 1816) now a widow was living with his 3 year old daughter,
(Charles's wife, Bertha Fredericka Louise Doughty (nee Mueller) had
passed away on 07.09.1861 at 35 years of age). Charles "George" Doughty
appears to have made a name for himself and his home still stands in Mt
Gambier in Doughty Street.

The Valentines had 7 children, the first born Charles Franklyn Valentine
in Penola on 19.12.1864. Charles Valentine died on 12.09.1915 in North
Adelaide.

William Burcham was also living in Mt.Gambier at the time. The Doughtys
and Burchams were related back in Norfolk in Wymondham.

I am trying to tie up the early Doughty, Valentine and Burcham families
living in Mt.Gambier with the later ones that arrived between 1876 and
1888. The first of the Doughty brothers (sons of Robert Nicholas and
Elizabeth Doughty ) - nee Burcham of Portsea - Hampshire, (however both
Robert and Elizabeth were born in Norfolk) was Robert John Doughty, with
his wife and first cousin, Hannah Doughty (my husband's gg grandparents)
they arrived on the "Clyde" on 22nd December 1876 in Port Adelaide.
However, they did not disembark until 2nd January, 1877. We could not
work out why the couple disembarked in Port Adelaide, when Hannah's
brother lived with his wife any family in Tumbarumba in N.S.W.

We feel sure the later arrivals disembarked in Port Adelaide, because of
the earlier Doughtys and Burchams living in Mt.Gambier. Any history of
the S.A. families would be very much appreciated.

Regards,
Janice
Belrose - Sydney.
