A lot of my illigitimate were under mother's name. And some missing were
misspelt. Of course a lot not registered at all. Quite often there were
complaints in the paper that this was happening but also because of
isolation parents were married and children christened at same time. My
missing ones seemed to be on the move a lot so guess it was possible as only
visited every few months they could have missed. Or simply Murphy's Law
they were ones who got lost as in one case the minister needed paper to
write his sermon and tore it out of the book. (told to us by a reputable
person) Well it was blank one one side (horror horror) I did find one
through where the family were christened she was christened but not
registered. I have at least 15 lost souls out there but slowly getting them
in other ways. Most of my lost ones were Irish and it could have been still
some suspicion of the English knowing about them. Like the Germans who
Angliced their names it was not uncommon for the Irish to drop off the O'
and remember a lot couldn't read or write so would not have known if it was
misheard or spelt. And if anyone have been helping with my
Pearce/Parker/Burkby story I can now tell you two of the deaths here in Qld
of siblings gave father as Parker and
the other Pearce Parker and they of course were the girls and the youngest
so probably mum told them something the boys didn't know especially as they
also had illegitimate children (These were registered) I could have
screamed. This is the second
time a single daughter who has lived at home to look after the mother has
given a fathers name different to others. I sometimes think it would have
been nice for me to never know but then half the fun is unraveling the
mystery (says she through gritted teeth) The oldest sister gave on her
eldest dtrs birth cert they had married in NSW but they married in Qld 6
children
later so the mystery still remains. We may never know but fun to
speculate and
keep hunting.
