Another from my darling Dad's mementoes. (Dated two months before his 18th
birthday). For reasons which are not to difficult to discern, this was his
favourite cutting! :-)) Pencil date 1925. I don't know the name of the paper
(can anybody make a suggestion?), but here goes:
Ramco v RSA
Waikerie, 19 Jan (1925)
Ramco came to Waikerie in full strength on Saturday last, and filled with a
determination to down the soldiers. RSA had first use of the wicket and opened
with DOWLING and BROWN, both of whom eventually became victims of G JONES. E W
BARTLETT (31) was top scorer of the day. He batted attractively and confidently,
and also bowled well, securing 3 wickets. It is difficult to understand why he is
not given the (ball?) earlier than is generally the case. Following the dismissal
of the opening batsmen, TODD, TERRELL, and HALLIDAY saw their uprights scattered
for a cypher in quick time by W ROGERS, who bowled exceptionally well throughout
the innings. The remaining batsmen did not offer much defence and certainly were
not aggressive against the bowling. A few byes which went to the boundary helped
to bring the total to 79. The Ramco men fielded keenly. At the wickets they were
not much in advance of RSA but a number of them had "lives". HALLIDAY, behind the
stumps, was much below form. W ROGERS (23) again batted nicely. NORTON* made the
winning stroke (in four) and thereafter interest in the match lagged. BROWN made a
gallant effort to win the game when it looked forlorn. He appears to have become
the mainstay of the RSA attack. S J ROBERTSON and K NORMAN were each given an
over and each secured a wicket.
