Subject: [AUS-SAGEN] LEHMANN Family & guests: Waikerie, 1920s
Date: Sat, 5 Apr 2003 00:17:06 +1200

This is from my late father's collection of newspaper snippets, kept from his SA
days (1923 - 1929). I don't know the date, unfortunately, but a LEHMANN
researcher might be able to identify it. (My father was very friendly with this
family):

"A party was held at the residence of Mr & Mrs H F W LEHMANN, Waikerie, to
celebrate the 21st birthday of their daughter, Melba, on Tuesday. Mr & Mrs
Lehmann received the guests. Games, competitions and dancing were enjoyed. Mr
Ralph MATTHEWS, Mrs W T BLUCHER, Mr KUTZER* and Miss DUNNING won competitions.
Songs were rendered by Miss Eileen GOSLING, and Mrs BLUCHER, accompanied by Miss I
VIRGO. Mrs Blucher played the dance music. Supper was served. Mr J C ROWE
presented Miss Lehmann with the gold key, and her father presented his daughter
with a gold wristlet watch.

Among those invited were Mesdames H F W LEHMANN, W T BLUCHER, Gust SCHULTZ
(Tuscan), B H STEWART, W R CATES, J C ROWE, A E WOHLING, Victor ARMSTRONG & H
LEHMANN; Misses Dorth CATES, Sylvia DRABSCH (Loxton), Gertie SCHULTZ (Tuscan),
Elsie DUNNING, Eileen GOSLING, A KLEEMAN, Isobel VIRGO, P TAYLOR, Iris TAYLOR,
Flossie GARWOOD, Evelyn EVERETT, Joy COATS, Gladys LEHMANN, Melba LEHMANN, S
LEHMANN, D RENK & E WALTERS (Morgan).

Messrs W T BLUCHER, H F W LEHMANN, Gust SCHULTZ (Tuscan), ..STEWART, W H CATES,
J C ROWE, A E WOHLING, Victor ARMSTRONG, H LEHMANN, E SCHULTZ & R SCHULTZ
(Tuscan), F METTERS, L ARTHUR, M KLEEMANN, R MARSCHALL, H HEADLAND, E OHLMEYER,
KURTZER* Chris, Gust; S NORTON, G TYLER, K BURNS, R MATTHEWS, V LEHMANN, H
LEHMANN, M KUHLMANN, C ROWE & J ALLEN."

My father emigrated to Waikerie in 1923, possibly under the auspices of the
Barwell immigration scheme. He initially worked on a fruit farm owned by the
SCHULTZ family. I assume that they are the family mentioned in this list. What
does Tuscan, in brackets after their name, stand for please? Could it be the name
of their farm, or would it be a village / town / settlement?

Apart from the names Lehmann, Schultz and S Norton (my Dad), I also recognise the
name of Eileen Gosling, who was also a friend of his. I hope that this article may
be of interest / value to somebody. (There are more articles to follow).

* Spelling as it appears in the article - two different versions - I don't know
which is correct.

Kind regards

PS Brainwave! Could somebody with the SA Birth index please look up the entry
for Melba LEHMANN? That would give us the necessary clue for the date of the
article. (She would have been born 1908 or earlier, as my Dad left Australia in
1929).

Also, could I also ask for a birth look-up, similar time-frame, for Eileen
GOSLING, please? I've just found her 21st birthday report, which I'll post to the
list. (And was she the Eileen who married Douglas BUSHELL - 1930s?)
