But why have you done all this work!! Surely it should be for the good
of all? I cringe at the idea that genealogy data is to be kept secret,
etc. What are you afraid of? Someone benefiting from your research? I
do it for all to benefit. I do it so all my rellies can benefit. I
hope that all will share such data rather than become a closed shop to
those who can afford the time to sit in genealogy centres for hours.

I restate that there are several models used O/S for societies to
reimburse them for the cost of putting together their databases.

Doug

I just have to buy into this concept of "putting everything on the net".
I use and enjoy the net but I have also belonged to my family history
society for many years.
Family history societies and people like Judy, Heather and Martyn have
worked hard for many years making resources available. How are family
history societies going to survive if every thing is "on the net"- even
for a fee?
I also exist on a low student's allowance but how would societies be
reimbursed for the time and money expended on their cemetery and other
projects? These indexes are their life blood!
I appreciate and applaud what Dianne has done, but our Society has just
digitally imaged over 14 000 headstones in our local cemetery. What
would happen to us if we just "put it on the net"? I know we are all
selfish in wanting our family history for free, but think past that and
into the medium and long term future.
best wishes
Sandra in Maryborough Qld
www.satcom.net.au/mdfhs will show you what efforts we and most FHS's put
in to family history
