Hi Michelle,
It's possible that Elizabeth Halliday was just a mature woman who cared for
mother's-to-be & new mother's. One of the ladies in my family tree, who was
separated from her husband, did this as a means of support (around 1905 till
1920's). Quite a number of babies were born in her home in Mildura, Vic.
and they and their mother's were cared for by her. Sometimes toddlers &
pre-school children accompanied their mother's too. Also mothers who were
"poorly" during pregnancy may have come for a rest if their families could
afford it.
Generally the mid-wife was called in when the mother went into labour. In
this area it was possibly more usual, as many of the women lived in homes
that were quite isolated and often had no family nearby who could care for
them and their other children at these times, especially if their husband's
were away from the property for a period of time.

This is just one possible explanation. Hope it's helpful.
Chris Cook.

their family tree. My grandfather was born (out of wedlock) at the home of
Elizabeth Halliday, and I would like to know if she may have been a midwife?
