Hi Audrey,
From the book "Riverton Heart of the Gilbert Valley" published 1965
"Riverton's first school was conducted at the home of Mrs Beck, whose
husband worked on Olley's farm about a mile east of Riverton, near the
creek crossing familiarly known as Minchin's. ... when she managed this
establishment during the 'fifties, the building was used for a school
during the week, but on Sunday became a Primitive Methodist chapel.
The next school in the new building erected and paid for by James
Masters on the site now occupied by the Parish Hall is thought to have
been under the direction of a Mr Fry. This school was built in the
'fifties - a stone building with a thatched roof. In 1857 the building
proved inadequate for the number of children wishing to attend ..."
(next school not built for several more years
Olley's farm was on the continuation of Oxford Tce east of the town as
stated (according to the map in the book)
If I am thinking of the right place, the Parish Hall was on the corner
of the main street and Oxford Tce at the northern end of the town - it's
where I sat all my high school exams, many years ago! The map in the
book is slightly wrong - I think there is a typo - 'cos I know where the
high school is!
Regards,
Helen
