Hi all,
I do not usually send messages to the group about things like this
unless I know for sure they are not a hoax.
This I LOVE YOU and its variants are by no means a joke. I work as an
Information Technology Consultant, and as such am privvy to early
updates on things like this. Take no chances with this one, it is very
nasty indeed.
DO NOT open any mail that has any of the following subject lines:-
I LOVE YOU; LOVE LETTER FOR YOU; MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL; A JOKE or A JOKE
FOR YOU. They will most likely appear to have come from someone on your
mailing list. DO NOT be angry with them - it is probably not their fault
at all. BE VERY WARY if you use Outlook (of any version) to do your
mail.
What this thing does, is find people's email addresses stored on your
computer, attaches itself to outgoing email and arrives on other
people's computers without your knowledge of it going there. It then
begins to attack executable files on their computer (progam files and
others that make programs run) - but that is not all. It attaches
iteself to picture files and other video files as well, and runs a
visual basis script which damages other files and can even reformat your
hard drive for you - or parts of it - every time a picture is opened.
I suggest that you all go to the home pages of whatever virus protection
software package you are presently using and obtain (they are free) the
latest updates to kill this virus. If you can't get it - change virus
protection packages. I use a package called e-safe from Aladdin - it has
regular updates on viruses and regular updates on the dat files needed
to find them - in fact this was the first package to detect this
malicious virus. The home page for it is
http://www.eAladdin.com/home/csrt/update.asp
It really is no joke. I know of at least 6 national and 5 multi-national
companies that I deal with on a daily basis who have been hit by it in
recent days. If you don't want to lose all of your hard work, protect
yourselves now.
I know this is way off topic, but it is serious enough to warrant it.
