I'm new to this list, my name is Kaye Soulsby (nee O'Donahoo) and I live in Melbourne Victoria.
I hope someone on the list will be able to help me. I am bedridden at the moment and need some on-line help to progress my searching, as libraries etc are beyond me at present.

My 3rd Gt GFather was Capt.Thomas Alexander O'Donahoo, born in Ireland. He served in India as a Quartermaster in the 8th King's Royal Irish Hussars. His 1822 muster papers show him registered under the name Thos. DONAHOO. He was given a grant of land in Tasmania from the British Govt around 1828.

He married Eliza O'NEILL (possibly Ireland/India) and had 4 sons: Thomas (no birth details so far) James (b. Singapore 1820) William (b.1819) and Arthur Henry (b.1825).

There may have been more children born in Sth Australia.

James O'DONAHOO also farmed in partnership with a Mr William EMMETT in the Lyndoch Valley in SA.
He married a Miss Frances Emily NEALE (in 1852). She was daughter of William Henry NEALE (who ran Neale and Emmett auctioneers.) and Mary Elizabeth YOUNG. Frances must have been a brave woman spending her honeymoon on a bullock trek.

I have a transcript of two diaries of his pioneering overland trek by bullock cart from Koramora (S.A.) to Sandhurst (Bendigo) leaving on 5/8/1852 and arriving on 3/11/1852. One diary by J.O'D and the other written by W.A.Emmett chronicling the gruelling journey of between 500 - 600 miles.

Could some kind person pls help me out with a SA bdm check for any O'Ds and variants DONAHOO, O'DONOHOO etc. and info linking them with EMMETT or NEALE or HENNELL families -- or suggest some likely strategies? I would be most grateful.

I would be happy to provide details of the 19 members of the overland trek if any other listers are interested.

Thanking you in anticipation and happy hunting

Kaye Soulsby
