Yes Alan, I would tend to agree with you, that a ready reference
would be good - BUT for one small problem - pre-1900 the various
books that BDM records were kept in were stored and maintained
within local/district council areas - and the numbering systems
could be quite confusing eg:-
At Mt Barker in the Adelaide hills, there are 3 lots of books -
Nairne, Mt Barker and Strathalbyn - each with its own numbering
system and each relating to a separate local/district council of
the day - but all controlled now by Mt Barker District Council -
and not even kept at the Council office! (They used to be kept in
a tin shed out the back of the local court house with the
spiders, rats and mice for years!!)
The Registrar has produced a list of sorts, but even that has
bits missing.
