I am hoping to find someone on the list who could be researching, or
have knowledge of, the KERSHAW family from Soyland, Halifax Parish,
Yorkshire who I am informed lived in the Mount Gambia area.
Through the Yorksgen list I have received the following information.

“Birth of Zella Sophia KERSHAW 1 December 1866 father Eli KERSHAW mother
Zella Balm. District East Robe.

Death of Zillah Kershaw age 39. 4 August 1867. East Robe. Informant Eli
KERSHAW.

Marriages of: Ellen KERSHAW 19y Single (f Eli KERSHAW) married David
Edmund BATES 24y (f James BATES) 24 February 1869 at the Manse mosquito
Plains Dist Robe.

George KERSHAW 23y Single. (f Eli KERSHAW) Spouse Margaret Boyd GIBSON
19y Single. Father James GIBSON. 14 March 1880 at the residence of
George KERSHAW (Millicent) Children of George and Margaret. George
Raymond 21 September 1880 at Millicent Ellen Boyd 7 Dec 1881 at
Millicent. Zilla Hanna 24 February 1883 at Millicent

Hanna KERSHAW 29y Single (f Eli KERSHAW)
Spouse Arthur BANKS 38y W (f Arthur BANKS)
1 May 1882 at St Bartholomew Church Norwood.

Zilla Sophia KERSHAW 23y (f Eli KERSHAW)
Spouse James DUNCAN (f James DUNCAN)
4 April 1889 at Trinity Church Adelaide. “

The father Eli was born in Yorkshire 1815 and so was his wife Zilla in
1828.
Son George also born in Yorkshire in 1857 so they must have left for
Australia some time afterwards.

This family are connected to the well researched lines in Camden,
Kershaw County, South Carolina, USA founded by Col. Joseph Kershaw and
his brother Eli, traders, statesmen and soldier in the Revolutionary
Army.
Joseph left his family home at Baitings Gate Farm, Soyland, Sowerby,
Halifax, Yorkshire aged 13 for London and moved to America in 1748,
later joined by Eli and brother William who stayed loyal to the British
cause.
After independence Joseph sent his sons James and John back to Halifax
to attend Rishworth School.
John became a Lawyer and statesman and his son General Joseph Brevard
Kershaw in the Confederate Army in the Civil War.

On June 21st a descendant from Camden is visiting Rishworth School and
we unveiling a Marker Plaque on the site of Baitings Gate Farm.

It would be very good to be able to make contact with any Kershaw
descendants in Australia – and have them send greetings for the event.

Of course we will gladly share the research on the Kershaw family with
them.
