Special Meeting - NZSG Dunedin Branch
This Monday, 14 March 2005 at 7.30 pm.
(Doors open 7pm for 7.30; sorry, no research on this evening).
Otago Settlers Museum, Queens Gardens, Dunedin.
James Donohoe, of Australia, will speak on his Paracensus of Australia
project, in which he collected a database of 130,000 records of early
settlers of Australia (and NZ) from 1788 to 1828.
James is a retired public servant and one of his assignments was as
Deputy Registrar of New South Wales BDM. He know a great deal about the
early records, which come from various sources -- Church records, BDM
registers, business records, victualling lists, government correspondence,
etc. His talk in Auckland has been described by one
member as interesting and very informative, delivered in easy style
and full of facts. James also spoke about the military, Norfolk Island and
other Pacific Islands. He answered questions and suggested answers to
problems.

ARANZ LECTURE 2005 - WELLINGTON
COURT RECORDS ACCESS: CASE CLOSED?
Who has access to your Court records? The media? Researchers? Your
neighbours?
* What do we mean by access to Court records?
* Who does it?
* Why do they do it?
* What are they doing with the information?
* Can access to court records satisfy both the Privacy Act and the
Media's catch-cry of 'the public's right to know'?
The ARANZ Lecture, a highlight of Archives & Records Week 2005, will
provide
some of the answers.
Last year's lecture, "The Ahmed Zaoui case and the Importance of
Records as
Instruments of Accountability in the post-9/11 Climate", revealed the
shadowy world of international security intelligence gathering and
damning
evidence of record keeping failings, including illegal destruction of
records, by Police, Customs, Corrections Department and intelligence
offices.
The ARANZ Lecture 2005 will be of vital interest not only to
record keepers and information managers, but also to every person who
has had or may have interaction with the New Zealand Courts of Law.
Two eminent experts will present their views and lead open discussion
during
the ARANZ Lecture:
Frances Joychild: A Law Commissioner responsible for reviewing the
law surrounding access to court records, she comments 'About five
years ago in some USA states the courts fully embraced "open justice"
by opening their entire electronic and hardcopy court records to the
public---with surprising consequences'. Frances will discuss open
justice in the New Zealand context - and the competing priorities
including for media requests, researcher requests and the public at
large.
Blair Stewart: An Assistant Commissioner with the Office of the
Privacy Commissioner in Auckland, he will discuss access to court
records in relation to the Privacy Act. He has a longstanding
interest in the study of name suppression law.
VENUE: Lecture Theatre 2, Old Government Buildings, Lambton Quay,
Wellington
WHEN: Wednesday 16th March, 5:30pm start for event, 6pm start for
lecture
RSVP required for event organisation purposes.
Please reply by: 5pm Monday March 14th to
ARANZ Wellington Branch Secretary

Who was Saint Patrick ?
The person who was to become St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland,
was born in Wales about AD 385. His given name was Maewyn, and he almost
didn't get the job of bishop of Ireland because he lacked the required
scholarship.
Far from being a saint, until he was 16, he considered himself a
pagan. At that age, he was sold into slavery by a group of Irish marauders
that raided his village. During his...

PROGRAM
www.sdays.free-online.co.uk
The main feature is EazyRead which converts LDS (Hugh Wallis' batch)
gedcom
(christening and marriage) files into text. The downloaded events may
be
sorted and arranged into family groups. This enables a quick sweep of
your
likely prospects to be easily examined. A few sample text files are
illustrated to give visitors a feeling for what is available together
with
links to some sites which are particularly relevant. Birth,
Christening,
Death (infant) dates occasionally appear in Christening events and the
odd
parent in a Marriage event.
The new additions are:- sorting the text data, choosing (bracketing)
dates
from Hugh's site, using EazyRead and WinXP (various methods) and
BVRI(2)
use. The program and original tips are unchanged.
