He was born in SC but served out of Arkansas. It's doubtful that he'd travel
from SC to Arkansas just to enlist.

You need to tell us where the family, wife, siblings, parents, etc was living
within Arkansas. Apparently they came there before he enlisted so they must
be there either before the war (1860 Census) or after (1870 Census). Where ?
