I've never seen this occupation in the 8 years I've done research. It actually was on the census record for Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory for 1880, but I figured anyone that has done research for a great deal of time could answer my question.

But exactly what was a scavenger? Does it mean the same as what it means today?

I haven't done any research for about 2 years and I've lost my favorites because of a virus, so I can't remember the website that gives me all that information.
