Hello,
I current received the 1907 Van Buren (Crawford Co.) Press. And located
my family I am interested in connection with familoes that are searching
DUFER - OWENS - HAMILTON - MERRY - DUFER
Below I have enclosed a the article that was posted in the Van Buren Press on
February 23, 1907

During a drunken frenzey Hugh Hamilton, a miner, because his wife, who had
been seperated from him for a month, refused to again live with him, shot her
ar Midland City Tuesday night with a 44 caliber pistol, inflicting a wound
from which she died Wednesday evening. Hamilton and his wife had not been
getting along very well for years on account of his excessive drinking and
has several times before separated. Tuesday he went to Fort Smith loading up
on whiskey and upon his return to Misland went to the home of his wife and
asked her to again live with him, which she refused, aying she would die
first. He then shot her and ran away. Later he surrendered to the officers,
and regretting his actions, asked to be taken to see her but she refused to
see him. He was then taken to Fort Smith and placed in jail.
The desceased was a sister of Mesdames Robert Mize, Albert Dufer, and Messrs.
Jacob and Thomas Owens and John Merry of this county. They did not learn of
the tragedy until Wednesday afternoon. Mr. Merry left on the "slicker" that
evening for Montreal and went from there overland to Midland, but arrived a
couple hours too later to see his sister alive.
The remains were by him brought to Van Buren on the "slicker" Thursday and
taken to the home of Jacob Owens in Jaspertownship, from where they were
conveyed to Dripping Springs Cemetery and buried yesterday.
In this connection we wish to say the Western Union Telegraph Company should
be made the subject of a damage suit. A message was filed Midland at daylight
to be delivered to an employee of this office, notifying him to arrange for
reception of the body, and it was not delievered until 1:30, more than an
hour after Mr. Merry had arrived with the remains. Such negligence has
occured more tham once to our personal knowledge.
*What is a slicker?
*Does anyone have the "History is Headstones" Crawford Co. by Swin & West
that can look in Dripping Springs and see if that can locate a first name for
My G.G. Grandfather's sister Mrs. Hamilton?
