Perhaps this will spread a little "Christmas Spirit"!

Van Buren Press
Van Buren, Arkansas -Crawford County
January 8, 1878

The "poor man's friend" -that's Capt. E. G. Whitesides. The Captain killed,
Tuesday, fifty fat hogs, that averaged 250 pounds apiece, and on Wednesday
he sends a man to Van Buren with a wagon-load of backbones and ribs, and
distributed them among poor friends. "Sides" is one of the best, as well as
most liberal hearted men in the county, and stands ready at any and all
times to divide with the poor unfortunate, that never had, nor never will
have anything. This is not the first time the Captain has hit us in the
breadbasket and we hope it is not the last.
