I remember the Arkansas River that ran through our town. It flooded the
whole downtown of Hutchinson, Kansas. We were about 2 blocks from the south
end of mainstreet and the river where the bridge was. I was a very small
girl but I have a picture of my family and some of the other neighbors
standing in the water in the middle of the street. One man caught a large
fish in our driveway with his hands. The water got up to the front porch of
our house . My parents had furniture stacked on top of each other. They
had a few chickens and they were in grates stacked on the back porch.
I'm new, want to write about my Jesse R. Harris and Sarah Salyer family.
Jesse was born in Va., in 1824 and married Sarah in Floyd Co,, Kentucky in
1848. They moved to St. Paul, Madison County, Arkansas where they started
their family and had several children before moving on to Arkansas. I have
looked for several years and found no proof of the father of Jesse. Don't
know why I never thought of joining this Arkansas message board. If anyone
can help, I would surely appreciate it. I have a name Raines somewhere, I
think her name was Nancy.
Thanks,
Estell
