BISMARCK-Warren H. YATES, 83, of Bismarck, a loving husband, father,
grandfather, brother, veteran of World War II, and a cornerstone of the
Bismarck community, passed from this life on Tuesday, March 1, 2005, at his
home in Bismarck
He was born on March 2, 1921, in Bismarck, where he was a charter member,
deacon, and Sunday School teacher at Unity Missionary Baptist Church.
After graduating from Bismarck High School in 1940, Warren worked for one
year in Malvern before being drafted in 1942. Warren served in the Army Air
Force as a Staff Sergeant from 1942 until 1945, during which time he fought
in the North African and Mediterranean campaigns. In 1946, he married the
former Louise Terry of Bismarck. He taught agriculture at Bismarck High
School from 1953 to 1961.
Warren received his bachelor's and master's degrees in agricultural science
from the University of Arkansas where he was a member of the Phi Sigma
Biological Society and Alpha Zeta fraternity - Arkansas Chapter.
In 1961, he became a rural letter carrier and served as district president
and was, from 1983 to 1995, state president of the Rural Letter Carrier's
Association. In 1973, he was named the Outstanding Carrier by the National
RLCA and in June 1997, received a Special Achievement Award from the United
States Postal Service. He retired after 41 years of service. He was
instrumental in founding the Central Arkansas Telephone Cooperative, the
Bismarck Fire Department, and served on the Hot Spring County School Board
Association.
Warren and Louise chose to make Bismarck their home because of their love
for and dedication to that community.
He was predeceased by his parents, Grace and Dwight Yates, and his
step-father, E. D. Yates, three brothers, Bruce, Roy and Milton Yates, and
grandson, Zeb Smith.
Funeral service will be 2 p. m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, at Ruggles-Wilcox
Funeral Home in Arkadelphia. Brother Don Goodman will officiate.
Pallbearers will be Paul Bond, Junior King, Clarence Wooten, Dean Goodman,
Pat Harris, and Elster Allen.
Burial will follow in Old DeRoche Cemetery in Bismarck.
Memorials may be made to the Zeb Smith Scholarship Fund at Bismarck High
School.
