Subject: [AR-SURNAMES] Fw: Are we losing the USGenWeb?
Date: Tue, 06 May 2003 06:26:33 +0000

And if we do, what happens to the information that we as volunteers have
submitted? Does it become the property of someone else to market? A friend
sent this on to me, and it really has us all concerned. Read below~~~~~~~~~~

discussion,...

>identical to what the (owner of the Archives) made with RW
>several years back. That would in effect make RW/Ancestry own the
>USGenWeb Project, and they could regulate the org as well. All the
>volunteers would be providing free labor, so that RW/Ancestry could
>continue to profit forever and ever from volunteers who have been
>indoctrinated to believe that no one is making money off our labor.

>We've addressed this issue before and many have tried to pass it off as
semantics, but the fact is as a legal entity, The USGenWeb Project does not
exist. In our 7 years now >of building these sites on line and everything
else we've done, we've never attained a >legal status as an entity that may
"hold property'" and transact business.
