I finally found information on my ancestor (William Alexander Setser) in this book:

Grant Foreman's compliation "History of the Service and List of Individuals of the Five Civilized Tribes in the Confederate Army"

He was at least half white and the rest Cherokee. He was in 2nd (Adair's) Cherokee Mounted Volunteers,Company C, and many whites used their Cherokee names when enlisting.

I know this doesn't specifically answer your question, but it's a start.

I have been researching william l sooter served in 1st cherokee mounted volunteers waites regt enlisted cherokee nation july 12 1861 co h. my question is did this regiment consist of cherokee indians only ?
