The 23rd Arkansas Infantry Regiment was captured at Port Hudson, LA on 8 July
1863. The men returned to Arkansas and were mounted by mid-1864. This is
likely the unit that generated the designation 23rd AR Cavalry, which does
not otherwise exist in the record. The 23rd Arkansas was surrendered by
Brig. Gen. M. Jeff Thompson, commanding the Northern sub-district of
Arkansas, on 11 May 1865.
