Hi, Kathy,
Thanks for taking a look. Actually, my original e-mail did say (albeit in
the last line!) that I am aware that census data is subject to errors on the
part of the informant. I didn't mention the enumerator, but I do agree with
you on that point. I, too, encounter constant instances of discrepancy in
birth place in the census.
In this case, the question arose not so much because a discrepancy existed,
but because the two brothers' records paralleled one another, lending
strength to the possibility that there may have been a motivation for
claiming birth in the U.S. In addition to the likelihood of an "Irish
stigma," I wondered about potential legal implications.
And thanks to those who located Robert Jolley in Laclede Co MO census. In
defense of myself, I will have to add that I had not yet gone "a-hunting"
for the missing census since the advent of the well-oiled online search
engines that we now enjoy. This line (my husband's) has languished for many
years. I hope to be able to revisit it sometime before the end of the year.
At present, the genealogy courses which I am taking have me deeply engrossed
in applying new skills to my own family.
Best,
Janis

Dear Janis,
You talk of the wives but in 1870 Robert is indeed listed as married but his
wife is NOT there. There is a 12-yr old son though. What if the son was
asked to give the data?
In Joseph's case his wife is there. So this theory does not apply there.
Sincerely,
Kathy Flynn
