All,
The APG code is a list of platitudes with no guidelines or definitions.

There are two sets of published standards for the discipline of genealogy:
_The BCG Genealogical Standards Manual_ published 2000 by the Board for
Certification of Genealogists and available at their Web site and most
genealogical book vendors.
This is the standards bible for most serious genealogists.

The national Genealogical society has established a complete set of
standards and ethics for genealogists which is available on their Web site.

But APG imposes no standard now for membership other than signing the
ethics statement and paying dues. And APG does not certify or
credential members. So where's the problem?

Bonnie replies:

The Code of Ethics is the standard for professionalism in the discipline of
genealogical research. As it stands now, when a person joins APG, they are
a full member, fully invested in what APG stands for. Some may feel that,
in joining a tiered membership, the highest standards are for those in the
higher tiers. An example would be, "Well, I'm just a beginner. I'm in the
Supporter category. People will understand if I don't conform to the
standards because this is just a hobby for me. I'm not doing this for a
living, like the people in the Professional category."
