There are records for a coffin maker in Cameron County, PA, that specify the exact size of each coffin made for a particular person. Besides the benefits Mary mentioned below, if an ancestor appears in these records you will know his approximate height! Children are often named only as "child of (father's name)" but the size of the coffin gives one an idea of whether it was an infant, small child or older child. Of course, my ancestors from this town used a different coffin maker, whose records did not survive. ;-)
