A big thank you to all that replied concerning funeral records in a
public library and their availability (or not).
The comments and views expressed by APG members reinforces both the
librarian's gut feeling and my advice to her. I know she will feel
better now that she has so many folks who have eloquently "argued" her case.
The index that is being prepared does cover many of the important
information we all love to find, so that will be a great entry tool
to the collection. We will also be cataloging both the index and the
record group in the future so that interested genealogists and
historians can find records in WorldCat, the Kansas Library Catalog,
and the local catalog. I believe the director's decision will follow
the APG members' opinions. Any library user may request to see the
full record in the library.
I don't know their policy and costs, but they may be willing to make
copies for distance researchers, too. So if anyone has Smith County,
Kansas roots, a new source is going to be more easily accessible now!
