A couple of comments--
I think a biologist might be surprised to hear that families were
created by kinship links. :) How about the following?

A genealogist is one who studies individual families and the kinship
links among those families.

But then, that definition also applies to family sociologists and
anthropologists, among others. So how about adding something about
studying families through time, e.g.

A genealogist is one who studies the history of individual families and
the kinship links among those families.
