They must be making fast progress! When I spoke to him last Monday, he told me 8.5 million records had been
added. 3.5 million had yet to be added. He said the database covers 1820 through 1892.

I just got off the phone with David Bromwich at the Battery Conservance,
which runs the site. I had a few questions for him as I am running an
article on the website in NEHGS eNews this week.

He told me that they have 10 million out of 12 million names transcribed.
The total records include not only the Castle Garden period, but the period
between the closing of Castle Garden in 1890 and the opening of Ellis Island
in 1892 when the Barge Office was processing records. The Barge Office was
also located in the Battery. Ira Glazier has been coordinating the project
for them, and has included a number of records from other ports that have
been important in his research. This explains the presence of the New
Orleans port records.

They are getting cost estimates to scan the images of the lists from NARA
microfilm. Unfortunately, NARA reports that the originals are too fragile to
be scanned.

I searched the Castle Garden database and found entries that I know
are on manifests from New Orleans, in particular on the Herman in
October of 1857.

There may be others, but this is the only one I have ready access to
with copies of the manifest at home.

Has anyone else noticed this?

I can provide specific names if anyone is interested.

Michael
