I have a case where the father died when the children were quite young.
Nothing about guardianship was done until the oldest son was 16 or so. The
2 boys, ages 14 and 16 chose their mother as guardian. As far as I can
tell, the oldest son went to sea, and I suspect that he needed permission
of his guardian to do so since his father was dead. It probably would have
also occurred if he had been apprenticed.
