The standard edition of Legacy is also free. This visual program is similar
to Roots Magic. It is also easy to use (they have included the training CD
on their website for beginners), has a Source Wizard, a To Do list (that can
be used as a research log), Split screen (where you can compare several
families at the same time) and has Clip boards for both the sources and
events (saving on typing)

It has the ability to include various religious events. Changes or updates
are free.

The deluxe version there is a GEO locator and a Chronology view that is very
helpful.
