In Seneca Co NY I have been to the Surrogate's office and looked at
probate files which should have had guardianships. For one example
from 1813, I did not find anything on guardians there in the loose
original probate files or the ledgers (although I might not have
asked the right question; maybe there is a "guardianship ledger" I
did not know to ask for at the time).

However, in land transactions in the County clerk's office I found
reference to the guardians, including their names, years later when
the minor children in question sold their land. The land records
were the only place I could find the acreage distribution and
reference to the guardians. I also found all the children's names
listed in various land records; they were not listed in the probate
file at all.

Microfilmed probate files do not always contain everything in the
file, (or in ledgers but relating to the probate file, e.g. a ledger
of letters of administration), so you are right to double check after
viewing a microfilm.
