In all my classes I suggest trying some of the trial versions, it helps them get an idea what the programs are capable of, but also to identify what they want it to do. Some people are really interested in the whole multimedia thing, others are primarily concerned with data recording, or generating charts and reports, or creating a book. Different programs may be stronmger on one area.
A big consideration is the individual's familiarity with computers as well as genealogy. I've had people in classes (Internet genealogy, no less) who don't know how to turn the machines on!! Well, ok, may they can turn it on, but their comfort level is down at the bottom of the chart. And if they don;t know how to "do genealogy" yet, they will have to learn that at the same time!
