I agree with every thing that was said so far.

Even though I teach classes, I try to stay away from recommending a software
program for two main reasons. Each and every person has their personal
preferences. And the second reason is that I don't want to feel responsible
for their choice.

Check out Cyndi's list under "Software" for a total list.
Check out the various genealogical publications for software reviews. In the
newest issue of "Genealogical Computing" is the 2005 list of genealogical
software.
