Ed,
Here is some more information.
If you ask 10 genealogists their favorite program, you might get at least
5-7 different answers. Genealogy software is a personal thing, it appears.
Just like any filing system, what works for one may not work for another.
I personally like RootsMagic. It is very easy to use and I use it for client
work. Since I started my personal research in 1980, I had too much data to
re-key in, so for my personal research I am using The Master Genealogist.
The program had, at one time, an import feature for Roots III which I had
been previously using.
Most of the programs' websites allow you to download a trial version for you
to try the program out - very handy.
Also I suggest that you look at this web site IRT an electronic filing
system: http://home.utah-inter.net/bygones/
According to its' author, Troy Adair, Bygones (Basic Genealogical
Note-keeping System) "is set up to make the initial recording of the results
of genealogical searches very easy, since it is meant to be used to record
your research process as you do research--when time is often limited and
precious."
Bygones is a freeware software program designed to enter and keep
genealogical research notes on a laptop or desktop computer. Bygones is
available as freeware for Windows 95+ and Macintosh computers. The Bygones
program, which is a FileMaker Pro 4.0 Runtime database program that will
work only with the Bygones databases. It has many databases for all of that
data we have to enter and I have found it to be quite useful and, really
important, easy to use.
The program designer has set up a mail list that is semi-active but he
monitors it and is usually right there with help/advice. The mailgroup
messages are archived and can be reached from the website also.
Since the program is free - it won't cost you anything to try it out.
Hope this helps,
Ann Staley
