Often a guardian is appointed only if there is a "triggering event."
Examples of these: The widow decides to remarry, in which a guardian would
be appointed to assure that the widow gets only her dower share, or the
children become heirs to their father's share of the estate of either of his
parents. The appointment of a guardian will often come several years after
the death of either parent.
