Subject: guardianship in 1850's

Good morning all:
I have been asked to track the family of someone who
died in 1851 in Montgomery Co., NY and left a widow
and minor children. My client has searched the filmed
guardianship records but hasn't found anything. Would
a guardian have definitely been appointed in such a
situation and time? We're thinking that if I went to
the probate office I could likely find additional
information that was not filmed. Perhaps they would
be in other court records? Thanks for any additional
insight.
Rebecca
