Reference Craig's comments on a bibliography for the War of 1812, we should
not forget M1856, Discharge Certificates and Miscellaneous Records Relating
to the Discharge of Soldiers from the Regular Army, 1792-1815 (6 rolls).
This recently released NARA publication (filmed thru the efforts of NIGRA),
illustrates the usefulness of a well crafted Descriptive Pamphlet. The DP
is on line and is still being enhanced thru new information in the annexes.
Embedded within the DP are general references relating to the War of 1812.
In fact, it even has an abbreviated discussion of M233, Registers of
Enlistments in the U.S. Army, 1798-1914 (81 rolls). If you have ever looked
at M233, you will likely be frustrated with the lack a DP with information
on the publication. One of our own APG members, Claire Prechtel-Kluskens is
responsible for the DP on M1856. She was assisted by many, including Marie
Melchiori. Now if we could only get NARA to write all DPs like this one and
post them to their web site, our research would be easier. Oh well - I am
sure NARA will do this as time, money and staff permit (g).

working on for several years. If you have someone who died in the war you
are welcome to contact me to see if I have anything on file.
