Good frosty morning:
My laptop died, and I must find a replacement pronto. My wife and I are
fighting for the desktop which we both use professionally. The laptop
must be able to display census, World War I Draft Applications and the
like easily. So I know I need a large (15+) screen. I've narrowed things
down to the following:
Memory: 512MB or better
Processor: at least 1.6GHz - Pentium-M best according to PC-World reviews.
Screen Size: at least 15"
Hard Drive: Anything over 20GB
Optical Drives: 8X DVD-ROM or 24X/10X/24X CD-RW. I'm quite uncertain
about this - not my strong suit.
Graphics Memory: At least 64MB, probably 128MB of dedicated video RAM or
VRAM; dedicated video memory rather than that pulled from the main
memory - UMA or SMA. I need this to drive Powerpoint presentations onto
a large screen and other detailed information such as census to page
through quickly on my 15+ screen.
Floppy Drive: Do I need one? I don't think so, but maybe someone can advise.
Wireless ethernet: The Pentium-M uses an 802.11b/g capable card.
I've seen new wireless mouse systems which intrigue me. Anyone use those?
My computer repair shop uses Acer and told me he can get me one quickly.
The question is, how good are they? Reviews thus far seem pretty decent.
Anything this great group can tell me regarding their experiences would
be much appreciated.
Genealogically yours,
