Perhaps we have discussed this topic enough but I wanted to add my
experience on this subject.
Some 15 years ago, I was fortunate enough to see a bible in which my great
great grandmother had listed the family births, marriages and deaths. Some
information was written as she heard it. For example, she wrote my
grandmother's birth in 1903
as 19 3. Later someone "corrected" the information including changing dates
entirely. Most of these corrections are wrong. The corrections show up
clearly in the bible but are not obvious on the photocopies. The bible has
since disappeared so only the photocopies exist. As stated here earlier,
sometimes photocopies, microfilm etc. are all we have to look at but it's
well to remember and note that we aren't looking at the original.
