Now that the Fourth of July weekend is behind us, it's time to turn our
attention to Labor Day and the upcoming FGS conference in Austin.

Once again, the Board for Certification of Genealogists has several activities
planned for Austin. At our luncheon on Thursday, J. Mark Lowe, CG, will discuss
"Diamonds, Rubies, and Lumps of Coal: Defining Today's Genealogists." Do you
wonder where you might fit in his sliding scale? I certainly do! Our
certification workshop is set for Friday from 9:30 AM to noon. If you want to
learn how others have prepared for certification and what you can do to master
the needed skills, plan to attend and bring your questions.

And if you want to see actual application portfolios, some will again be
available at
the BCG booth in the Exhibit Hall. You'll be able to review them while in the
hall.

The Board for Certification of Genealogists Education Fund is pleased to sponsor
an all-morning workshop on Saturday called "More Abstracting Records for
Accuracy and Success." In this hands-on session, Christine Rose, CG, will deal
with a variety of probate records that are often part of the researcher's work.
Christine is well-known for her extensive experience in on-site courthouse
research, so she'll be able to address records from a variety of locations.

Remember that the BCG Education Workshop is limited to 50 registrants to allow
for hands-on work. As of today, there are still spaces available, so be sure to
indicate your attendance when you register. The nominal registration fee of $10
covers the costs of materials and helps track registration.

The conference early-bird registration deadline is 26 July. If you register
before then, you'll have $30 to spend on meals or in the Exhibit Hall!

Hope to see you in Austin!
