A "pen" is the basic unit of log dwellings, a room either square or
rectangular.
A "pale" is a narrow, upright, pointed stake used in fences.
They may have dug a trench around the garden for drainage, if this was in
the flatland part of Arkansas. (That one's just a guess!)
19 acres cleared, fenced and in cultivation; 1 acre, fenced, not cleared.
