June,

The Veterans Administration does have Union soldiers pension files. They had
my Union soldier ancestor's pension file.

You may have to write more than once for the file. I am starting my third
request for one ancestor.

I was also instructed by NARA to write to my local (closest) Veterans
Administration Regional Office. NARA included a form letter, with their form 85
response, which listed mailing addresses for these regional offices, listed by
state. At the top of this form, NARA had filled in my ancestor's name and the
number for the pension file at the Veterans Administration. This number seems
to begin with "XC."

I wrote to the Veterans Administration, 14 August 2003, and included copies
of my original request to NARA and the NARA form letter with the pension
number. I received a letter registering my request in February 2004 and received
the copied file in May 2004. It appears that the file was copied on 11 March
2004.

I learned from the regional Veterans Administration office, that the request
goes to them, they forward it to the central storage facility and the file
is sent back to the regional office for copying.

Note: Read your file as soon as you get it! Your regional office will only
have the file for a short time and then it is sent back to storage.
Fortunately, I read the file promptly because I found several pages that were not
completely copied, these were all longer than average sheets where the bottom
portion had been folded up to fit the folder. I also found a few pages that were
not legible.

If this happens you can call the regional office, and request new copies;
however, I found it hard to communicate the sheets I needed as they are not
numbered or titled distinctly. I went to the regional office, which surprised
and pleased them, and got all the copies I needed.

This is a long process but since there is no cost for copying the file, from
the Veterans Administration, and the information gained was invaluable; I am
beginning "the process" again for another Union ancestor.

Good luck,

Hello June,
The National Archives should have Union pension records, while the
Confederate pension records are usually found in a state archives or
similar repository. For more information see...

Good luck with your search.
